Your Newborn & Baby Photo Session - What To Expect

Hey Guys & Girls,

Im sure by now you all know just how much I love love love newborn & baby photography!

I wanted to take some time to write a little bit about what goes on behind the scenes, the nitty gritty.. and of course the fun stuff!

Here I will also be explaining about the preparation of your photo session and what happens during & after.

So here we go...

1- Communication - Communicating with you is a very important part of getting ready for the session. You will be advised on what to wear for your session if you are having family photos, we will discus the colour schemes that you want so your images complement your home, and we will go through what you need to bring for the session.

2- Setting up the scene - There are lots of things that Photographers need to do to set up for the session. Some of these things include:

  • Making sure that you are are coming into a clean & tidy environment

  • Having the camera charged & the lighting ready to go

  • Making sure the area is nice & toasty warm for your baby

  • Getting the relaxation music on & the white noise app ready to use

  • Setting up the scenes, backdrops, outfits & colour schemes

  • Having changing mats & towels at the ready

3- The session itself - Most people assume we will be shooting from start to finish time, however a lot of the session is spent feeding, changing & soothing your baby. Once your newborn is relaxed I start wrapping / swaddling & posing them into the prop or onto the posing beanbag. A couple of snaps from each angle are taken & then we move on to the next set up.

As a photographer I have already planned the next move in my head. Flow posing is very important, which is transitioning your baby from one pose to the next with minimal movement to avoid unsettling them.

After several set ups & outfit changes we then move on to the sibling and/or parent shots if this is in the schedule.

A couple of examples of me at work:

4- Post Session - This is where I will be going through the images from your photo session. I split them into different folders for each set up, then using my professional opinion I pick out one favourite of each angle from each set up. I then start to edit these images one at a time perfecting the angle, lighting, editing skin etc.

A gallery is usually around 10 images and the approximate editing time for a whole gallery can take up to 6-9hours to complete, which I will do over the course of a few evenings.

Here are a couple of before & after editing examples:

5- Packaging - Preparing & packaging up your images is also a very important part of your experience because apart from your memories, this is the one piece that you get to keep forever. I like to make sure the appearence is cute, versitile to the sex of each baby and is continuous with the colours & theme of my branding.

6- Receiving positive feedback - So this has to be one of the best moments of it all. Hearing the positive feedback from you and hearing about your experience is very very rewarding.

As a Photographer, knowing that I have given you an enjoyable experience & memories that you adore & can cherish forever is the best feeling of all!
